Umerah Puts Addicks One Step Away From Title

Kwame Kufuor reports on Charlton vs Leeds United, as the Addicks move  closer to winning the Professional Development League 2 South.

Josh Umerah’s goal in the 54th minute clinched a 1-0 win for Charlton against Leeds United at the Valley to put the title in The Addicks’ grasp.

Charlton’s title celebration campaign was put on hold due to a win by Cardiff City against Hull City in the late kick-off.

Jason Euell’s side temporarily went 12 points clear at the top of the table with this victory.

Charlton were the first to register their intention 10mins into the game, after a spell of possession.

Mikhail Kennedy split the United defence in half with a pinpoint pass that Umerah latched on to before releasing it to Regan Charles-Cook who curled his effort just over the bar.

The Addicks came close to scoring again in the 27th minute. This time, Aaron Barnes’ quick feet and a beautiful cut back down the left proved too much for Leeds’ Tyler Denton to cope with. The ball fell at the feet of Ahmed Kashi, who forced Eric Grimes to make a save.

Impact

Just before the break, the visiting keeper Grimes was called upon again to make a save, this time from Kashi’s free-kick in the 40th minute after a foul on Umerah.

Charlton made a substitution immediately after the interval by replacing Kashi with Anfernee Dijksteel. Kashi managed 45minutes on his return from a long Achilles injury.

Dijksteel made a quick impact on the game with only five minutes of the half played when he sent in a thunderous strike towards the Leeds goal but it was well held by Grimes.

The league leaders’ intensive pressure paid off in the 54th minute when Josh Staunton found space down the right and released a teasing cross which was flicked on by Kennedy into an open space. Umerah was fast to react with a header to put Charlton ahead.

The visitors nearly equalized later on in the game when substitute Mallik Wilks’s shot was brilliantly blocked by skipper Harry Lennon.

The Addicks are now one victory away from officially winning the League, which makes their next game against Hull City at the KC Stadium a must see.
