Paris is not within spitting distance, but Sammie Curry was transported there from E1.
I had walked out of London, and stepped into Paris.
Confronted with coffee, pastries and sophisticated Continental music (more Francoise Hardy than Europop), I could have been on the Left Bank or even in Montmartre. On entering Patisserie Valerie, I had to pinch myself to check that I was still in Spitalfields.
After spending what seemed like hours in awe of the wide selection of cakes, I finally indulged in the most delicious treat I have ever tasted in London.
Bite-size slices of cheesecake, chocolate gateau, French Giotto, and strawberry tart… I just had to take advantage of the four for £10 offer and try all of them – purely for research purposes, of course.
As I drank my hot chocolate topped with the perfect amount of whipped cream, I felt as though I had been transported from the bustling, bristling city of London to a far more cultured place.
