Water, Water Everywhere

Tamisha Thomas wonders why the waterfall coat is splashed across the streets of East London.

The waterfall drape coat is everywhere! From fashion bloggers to celebrity style icons including KK, Rihanna and Towie girl Chloe Sims, everyone who’s anyone is rocking this latest must-have.

What is it, exactly? Put simply, ‘waterfall’ refers to the waved lapel that creates a ripple effect when worn. It’s been around for a long time – but this past year the waterfall has been more visible than ever before. Often paired with a belt to accentuate the waistline, almost every shop on the High Street now includes the waterfall drape on its coat rack.

From Burberry’s military trench coat to edgy biker jackets and comfortable cardigans, the waterfall’s ripple effect adds elegance and style.

Admittedly, this trend is not for those whose first aim is to keep warm. Waterfall garments tends to be fairly thin – especially compared to a full overcoat. But thanks to its wide and flexible fit, the drape coat leaves room for multiple layering underneath.

Versatility is the main attraction: the waterfall seems chic on all body shapes and sizes, and is easily transitioned from day to night. Also, because it’s not too thick, it can start out in winter and keep on rocking it till May or flamin’ June.

Tam’s Tips:

  • Pair it with your favourite skinny jeans and a thick turtle neck jumper for the modernist effect.
  • Combine with a pair of distressed ripped jeans and floppy felt hat to achieve a seventies-retro look (especially popular in East London this month).
  • Team your waterfall with comfortable sneakers or brogues for a relaxed day-time look; then vamp it up with a low cut dress and statement stilettos for a night look that could kill!
