Who Are You Calling ‘Paleo’?

Going back to the diet of our ancestors does not make you a troglodyte, insists Nika Jazaee.

There is no secret that I enjoy writing about food, mostly because it is such a big part of our lives. Just think how much time you spend on food shopping, talking about food, meeting friends and family around food or cooking food.

As social media have opened up a new way of communicating, they also opened up a new way of dining. Trends to do with how to eat, when to eat and how to make the things you eat are covering our social media, and with that influencing our lives more than ever before.

One trend that has got my attention in particular is the “Paleo” diet. Why? The idea is that to avoid chemicals, refined sugar and too much dairy produce (which seems to be bad for us) you have to go back in time – way back to the diet of our ancestors in the paleolithic period.

Robb Wolf is the ‘paleo’ champion who insists it is the only diet that goes well with our genetics, thus helping to maintain good health and strength. Besides rejecting sugar and trans fat because they lead to diabetes and other diseases, he provides a template of what to eat and what not to.

On the ‘off’ list are: dairy, grains and alcohol. Beneficial foods include healthy fats, seafood and nuts. The whole point is for you to not eat processed food, and to keep your diet as natural as possible.

Is it just a trend or is this actually something we should look into more seriously? Well, I would say that we should give it a try. If you need more information read this essay:
