Four-time Olympic champion and Tour de France winner Sir Bradley Wiggins will be attempting to break Rohan Dennis’s world hour record at London’s Olympic Velodrome on June 7.

Wiggins is looking to add the record to his impressive list of accomplishments with the possibility of 6,000 fans being in attendance to cheer him on.

“The hour record is a holy grail for cyclists, it’s been fought over tooth and nail by some of the greatest names in our sport for over a hundred years and it’s time for me to have a crack at it,” Wiggins said.

Wiggins also hopes that this will inspire more people to get their bikes out and start cycling, saying, “I like the idea of challenging myself and want to motivate people to do the same, so why not get your bike out of the shed and see how far you can go in an hour?”

Wiggins competed in his last race for Team Sky at the Paris Roubaix spring classic on April 12 and will ride in the Tour de Yorkshire next month before preparing for the hour record as part of his return to the track.

The current world hour record was set by Australian Rohan Dennis in February and stands at 52.491km. It is expected that Wiggins, whose track record includes three Olympic gold medals, will set a record which could last for some time.

However, Wiggins may have a new record to beat, as his compatriot Alex Howsett will be making an attempt at the record on May 2 at the Manchester Velodrome.

Tickets are already on sale and Wiggins will be hoping for a sell-out crowd with the event also being broadcast live on TV.
