‘Win And We’re Safe’

Kieran Baldwin previews The University Of East London men's second team's relegation six-pointer against Essex 3rds, as the Londoners look to finally put an end to their relegation worries.

UEL head into the game knowing a winning would all but secure their league status in the South Eastern 4D league. UEL currently have a much superior goal difference to their Essex rivals despite the latter having game in hand.

Essex sit bottom of the table three points off UEL but with a goal difference of -18 compared to UEL’s +6, so UEL need a win to almost guarantee survival.

UEL got back to winning ways in their last game in superb fashion, winning 5-2 against UCL away from home to give themselves that three-point cushion over Essex.

In their previous meeting, UEL hammered bottom of the table Essex 9-2, but a poor run in the league meant UEL went from title contenders to fighting to avoid relegation.

UEL centre back and captain, Stephen McGinn spoke to Rising East before the game.

“Last week’s win was a massive step forward for us, a win on Wednesday and we’re safe its as simple as that.”

It’s been a disappointing season for UEL and the high hopes at the start of the campaign were quickly diminished as a run of poor form which saw just two wins in seven games plagued UEL’s season.

McGinn went on to speak of the disappointing campaign that UEL have suffered: “We have been poor all season, there been no excuse for some of the results but now hopefully we can survive and build on that next season.”

If UEL emerge victorious in the game they can have the comfort of knowing their final match against Brunel can be played without any pressure.
