Writing On The Wall

Emma Brand cops an eyeful of East London’s graffiti.

Opinion is divided over graffiti: some people say that writing on the wall is an art while others think it is just a mess.

In the Shoreditch-Brick Lane area, graffiti are now an established part of the street furniture. Some shop owners even commission graffiti artists to decorate their premises, and there are sight-seeing graffiti tours with paying customers.

To my mind, the worst than can happen is when there is an artful piece, perhaps with a nice message on it, that is ruined by someone writing their own work (usually not so good) across the top.

Here’s my selection of notable examples. I’ll leave you to decide whether any of them are eyesores, or a sight for sore eyes.
