Thursday 3rd of May sees the first Newham mayoral election in years without Sir Robin Wales on the ballot sheet. Instead – and some would say at last – a new Labour candidate will join the field, in the form of Custom House councillor Rokhsana Fiaz. She will be up against Gareth Evans (Liberal Democrats); Rahima Khan (Conservatives); Chishala Kumalinga Christian (People’s Alliance) and Daniel Oxley (Democrats and Veterans’ Party).
Rokhsana Fiaz is the ‘bookie’s favourite.’ Why? Because the Labour Party has held power in Newham for over a quarter of a century now! That said, predictions are sometimes wrong, so the post is ultimately anyone’s for the taking.
This will be an important day for Newham. The council has been plagued by various social issues since the end of the 2012 London Olympics, and so new voters particularly need to know where to go, and when, and what they need to be equipped with – i.e that pen!
As usual, you may vote in a local election if you are registered to vote, over 18 and:
- A British, Irish or EU citizen living in the UK
- A qualifying Commonwealth citizen living in the UK
- Someone registered as a ‘crown servant’ or ‘service voter’
If you are already registered you should have received your polling card, giving you the details of your closest polling station. If you have registered but have misplaced your polling card that should not be a problem – you can still go to your local station and give your name and address. No further identification is needed!
If you’re unsure of your closest polling station, fear not, you can find out by searching your postcode on this site www.WhereDoIVote.co.uk – it’s that simple.
Remember to mark your choice clearly, making sure nobody can see you. If you make a mistake a replacement ballot will be given to you by a member of the polling station staff.
