Charlton will be looking to replicate their fine league form domestically when they face Plymouth Argyle in the first round of the FA Cup at The Valley on Saturday (3pm).

Tuesday night’s 3-2 victory over Fleetwood Town in SE7 stretched the side’s winning run to six on the spin.

The visitors travel to London on the back of a 4-2 midweek win against Swindon Town which saw them climb them up to 8th in the Sky Bet League One table.

Team News

Lee Bowyer will rest several first-team players on Saturday after the rigorous Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday, Tuesday League One schedule and will be without Welsh trio Chris Gunter, Jonny Williams and Dylan Levitt who are away on international duty, as is Northern Irish striker Conor Washington.

Marcus Maddison will be hoping for his first start in an Addicks shirt since arriving in SE7, though Akin Famewo (hamstring), Deji Oshilaja (foot), Alex Gilbey (achilles) and Alfie Doughty (hamstring) all remain sidelined.

Saturday will come slightly too soon for club captain Jason Pearce, but Bowyer has confirmed the defender should feature for the first time this season on Tuesday against Leyton Orient in the EFL Trophy.

Niall Canavan and George Cooper returned to the Argyle squad as unused substitutes on Tuesday night following self-isolation, while Scott Wootton is also available again for the visitors.

Ryan Lowe will be without long-term absentee Gary Sawyer, though midfielder Lewis Macleod is back on the grass following his knee injury.

Last Time Out

Last season’s FA Cup campaign saw the Addicks enter in the third-round in an all Sky Bet Championship tie with West Bromwich Albion at The Valley.

Lee Bowyer handed senior debuts to academy graduates Aaron Henry and Abraham Odoh, as a youthful Addicks side lost 1-0 after Kenneth Zohore’s first-half strike for the Baggies.

The Pilgrims defeated Bolton Wanderers 1-0 in the first-round last year to set up a tie with Bristol Rovers in which they drew 1-1, though exited the competition in the resulting replay after a 1-0 loss at Home Park.

Head-To-Head

Charlton have faced Plymouth 69 times, the Addicks winning 29 and the Pilgrims 26 with the remaining 14 games ending in draws.

The last meeting between the two sides came in April 2019 at Home Park in an encounter which saw the Addicks return to SE7 with three points thanks to a Lyle Taylor strike and a fortuitous own goal by Niall Canavan.

The last FA Cup meeting came in a third-round tie back in January 1981. The Addicks ran out 2-1 victors that day in a fixture which many remember for a brilliant performance by goalkeeper Nicky Johns – Charlton’s player of the year in 1981.
