Johnnie Jackson’s men stormed into a 2-0 lead away at Morecambe on Tuesday night and will be disappointed to only come away with one point after being pegged back to 2-2.

Sensational Start

With under two minutes on the clock, the visitors took the lead, Diallang Jaiyesimi finding the net with the aid of a deflection off Shrimps’ defender Greg Leigh.

Conor Washington doubled the lead in the 27th minute, racing in behind the Morecambe defence to latch onto a long ball forward from Craig MacGillivray, before lifting the ball over the onrushing Jökull Andrésson in the Morecambe goal.

However, just two minutes later, Chris Gunter was deemed to have fouled Morecambe striker Cole Stockton in the box, with referee Andy Haines having no hesitation in pointing to the spot.

Stockton made no mistake with the resulting penalty, firing it straight down the middle as MacGillivray dived to his left.

Shrimps Complete Fightback

The hosts then levelled the contest in the 72nd minute when captain Anthony O’Connor rose to meet an inswinging corner delivered by midfielder Alfie McCalmont.

A corner also provided the best opportunity for the Addicks to win the game.

In front of the 690 travelling fans who had made the long journey north, Elliot Lee sent in a cross which Washington got his head to, only to find his effort cleared off the line. A goalmouth scramble ensued, but Morecambe managed to clear their lines.

Jackson’s Judgement

Speaking to CharltonTV via Zoom from the Mazuma Stadium, Caretaker Manager Jackson said: “Getting pegged back was disappointing, but it’s another point and six unbeaten. Hopefully we can go to Shrewsbury and back that up with a win and then we’ve had a pretty good week.”

Charlton will look to continue their impressive six game unbeaten run in Sky Bet League One when they travel to Shrewsbury Town, who are currently in the relegation zone, on Saturday.
