Tom Reeves reports on an honour for a UEL cricketer…

Former Wanstead captain and University of East London cricket coordinator Arfan Akram has been picked in All Out Cricket magazine’s ECB Premier League team of the year.

Akram, who stepped down as Wanstead skipper at the conclusion of the 2014 season, was also chosen to captain the side.

The magazine described Akram, 30, as ‘Mr Wanstead.’

The 30-year-old batsman could not hide his joy at the honour of being selected in the team.

“A little while ago I was kindly advised that I was nominated and selected in the All Out Cricket Recreational Team of the year, which in it its own right is an incredible honour and privilege,” he said.

“However, I am genuinely lost for words in being selected as the captain of the Recreational Team of the year.”

A very humble Akram continued: “A big thank you for the nomination (I know who you are & you’re in serious trouble!!) and a bigger thanks to those that voted. Still, genuinely not sure why you did.”

“Arfan Akram will be known to many who play their cricket in Essex,” read his profile on the magazine’s website.

“As he hangs up his captain’s armband at Wanstead, his place in this side is reward for years of dedication and excellence.

“A top-order batsman – he’s scored over 8,000 runs for Wanstead’s 1st XI – and a natural leader, he is Mr Wanstead and he’ll do a fine job leading this talented XI.”
