Alfie Templeman Live

Emily Michie reports on 19-year-old indie artist Alfie Templeman

I travelled up from East London to catch Alfie Templeman’s recent show at The Waterfront in Norwich. That impressive voice singing popular songs such as Film Scene Daydream and Happiness in Liquid Form soon had everyone in the crowd dancing and singing along.

In the summer, Templeman performed at Rough Trade East, the Brick Lane music emporium that hosts in-store gigs. This was just after the May release of his debut studio album Mellow Moon which has been praised for its fresh-faced pop sound. At the time one listener tweeted, “Give Alfie Templeman’s Mellow Moon a go. It’s what I like to call a day brightener.”

The Waterfront only holds 700 people, which meant the performance felt more intimate. His song A Western was a great opener. It is full of pop culture references and Templeman’s soft vocals at the beginning when singing the lyrics, “Your favourite song is Tiny Dancer’’ got everyone excited about the evening ahead. The venue had a great atmosphere. Hands were in the air throughout, and phones bounced up and down when Templeman performed his hits, particularly 3D Feelings which he has previously described as “really fun to sing”. His vocal ability really shined in this song, and the chorus sounded just like the original. This was a crowd favourite.

On Halloween this Monday coming, Templeton is performing at HERE at Outernet and tickets are still available. This will be the 19-year-old performer’s last UK tour date before he heads overseas to the US. The show starts at 7pm and the venue is just down from Tottenham Court Road station towards Charing Cross, making it easy to get to from the East End. HERE at Outernet only opened in September, and holds 2000 people. Lancey Foux, an East London based rapper, is also performing at the venue in a couple of weeks.

Alfie Templeman is a singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer from Carlton in Bedfordshire. He gained popularity after uploading his music onto Spotify and was soon featured on their ‘Discover Weekly’ playlist. He knew how to use recording software by the age of 13 and had recorded his debut EP Like an Animal in from bedroom by 2018. Information on his upcoming gigs can be found here.
