The Center for Disaster Philanthropy has published a list of 17 distasters that have taken place this year – with COVID at the top of course – making 2020 the kind of year you can be forgiven for wanting to escape from.

And so it’s no surprise that Netflix has seen 16 million new people join its streaming service since the beginning of the pandemic. The Netflix share price has also risen from $333 dollars this time last year to over $520 this Christmas.

Waterstones has also seen a huge rise in online sales. The BBC reported back in March that COVID had already led to a spike in online sales of 400% week on week.

The video games industry has also had a huge boost this year. In July alone the industry sold over three million consoles, and by August sales overall of consoles was up 36.54% on the same time in the previous year.

Board games have also made a come back, and as one of the most successful has been that 1974 relic Dungeons and Dragons (D&D), we decided that in the run up to a Christmas when many may be stranded we’d escape reality ourselves by pitting experienced D&D players against people who had never played it before – to see what happens…
