Unbeaten Middleweight Elliott Matthews is set to challenge for the Commonwealth Title at York Hall this Friday.

The 37-year-old (21-0-1) who is a former English and Southern Area champion will take on Nigerian Rasheed Abolaji (11-4-1).

Main Event

Abolaji is coming into the contest off the back of a loss to Frenchman Bilel Jkitou (8-0) and will have to produce a career-best performance to upset the odds and win the vacant title.

This will be the second time Abolaji has fought in the UK, suffering a loss by unanimous decision to Sam Sheedy back in 2017, also for the Commonwealth Middleweight Title.

This is the first contest in Matthews’ career that is set for twelve rounds, but with 12 of his previous 22 bouts going the distance, his stamina is not expected to come into question.

A win for Matthews would catapult him into the mix for the British Title, which is set to be fought for by Marc Heffron and Liam Williams on the Warrington-Frampton undercard.

Undercard

Elsewhere on the card, Cherrelle Brown (3-0) will hope to maintain her unbeaten record when she takes on Kim Angelina Jaeckel (3-1) in a six-round contest.

Brown has passed all the tests so far with flying colours and will be looking to impress with a potential domestic showdown with Nina Bradley (7-0) in the near future.

Bradley is the current Female Commonwealth Super Lightweight champion, but Brown does hold wins over her back in the amateur ranks in 2015 and 2016.

Welshman Alex Hughes (11-0) is also in action, taking on experienced journeyman Adam Grabiec (6-23) in a fight designed to get him back on track. Hughes returned to the ring on the 17th December after 19 months out of action after suffering an eye injury.

Adolphe’s Comeback Trail

Louis Adolphe (9-1) will be continuing his comeback since his disqualification loss to Nathan McIntosh in 2017 with a 6 round bout with Zoltan Szabo (25-13). The war ready Hungarian has only been stopped 4 times in his career by opponents including current British Champion Robbie Davies Jr (17-1).
