In what can be described as a scrappy contest, Charlton and Chesterfield had multiple chances to take the lead throughout the duration of the game although both failed to convert.

There was end to end football in the opening minutes with Charlton‘s forward, Ademola Lookman coming closest to breaking the deadlock after his double deflected effort was comfortably saved by Liverpool loanee keeper, Ryan Fulton.

Seconds later, Fulton rolled the ball out to Left-Back Dion Donohue who’s long ball forward found striker Ched Evans in space, but his low driving shot was saved by Addicks number one Declan Rudd.

Missed Chances

Frustration continued to build as both team hit the woodwork, first Chester’s Dan Gardner’s curling effort on the 27th minute then when Nicky Asoje’s finessed shot hit the far post with Chris Solly’s follow-up flying over the crossbar.

Northern Ireland international Josh Magennis’ header produced a wonderful save from Fulton in the 42nd minute to ensure both sides went in level at the break.

Asoje should’ve given the home crowd faithful something to cheer about with 15 minutes of play left but his header was poorly connected and bounced past the post.

Super-Sub

Having only been on the pitch for four minutes, substitute Lee Novak headed the ball into the bottom right hand corner past Fulton thanks to a delicate cross from team mate Ricky Holmes.

The South-East London side held on for the remaining time to secure the three points and condemn Chesterfield to their sixth straight defeat in all competitions.

The win sees Russell Slade’s men climb to 14th in League One whilst the defeat adds further misery to Chesterfield’s season as they hover just one point above bottom of the league Shrewsbury.

Charlton’s next fixture sees them take on high-flying Scunthorpe this Saturday in the FA Cup first round at The Valley.
