In National League action on Tuesday night, Dagenham & Redbridge secured a deserved point away at York City as they drew 1-1, with Mo Sagaf’s strike in the first half balanced out by a late Sam Sanders equaliser.

Early Action

It was York City who had the brighter start to the game, as winger Maziar Kouhyar forced Daggers keeper Elliot Justham into making a fingertip save in the first couple of minutes. Soon after, a goal line scramble in the box lead to two great saves from Justham, with the ball also striking the crossbar. Despite this spell of pressure, the Minstermen couldn’t find the net.

Sagaf Scores

Contrary to how the game had panned out in the early stages, it was Dagenham who took the lead, as Sagaf pounced on a good save from the York shot stopper Ethan Ross and put Dagenham ahead in the 26th minute. A composed finish into the bottom left corner of the goal opened his account for the 2022/23 season.

City were the dominant side once again in the second half as many opportunities went to waste with Ryan Fellowfield sending a couple of headers wayward. York were eventually able to find the equaliser through defender Sam Sanders, who capitalised on a loose ball in the box following a fantastic run by debutant Nathan Thomas with only 5 minutes left of normal time. The game finished 1-1 at full time.

Managers Thoughts

Dagenham boss Daryl McMahon told the club website: “I think it’s a fair result really, to be honest.” It can’t be argued that a point is a bad result for the Daggers in the grand scheme of things, with York battling for a playoff spot. “We had some really good opportunities on the counter-attack and they had some good opportunities as well to be fair to them.”

The point leaves Dagenham 11th in the National League table going into a break from the league this weekend. On Saturday, the Daggers travel to Beckenham Town in the fourth qualifying round of the FA Cup.
