East London, were again dealt a devastating blow in the semi-final BUCs Championship as they lost by one point to rivals Loughborough, 73-74.

The highly intense game delivered a nail biting finale for the spectators and some top quality performances from both sides who left everything on the court.

Victory in Sight

The game was evenly poised in the first two quarters, with East London holding onto a close lead.

Point guard, Hollis Mitchell, started brightly with scoring some early points from the free throw.

Power forward, Brandon Peel, and Center, Grant Bryant, showed strength and resilience as they capitalised on Loughborough’s missed opportunities.

Mistakes were also being made from the home side as they gave away an interception which saw Loughborough’s Josh Ward-Hibbert score from the 3-point line and again in the second quarter with a huge dunk.

Home Advantage

East London coach, Dave Greenway, introduced the experienced, Jordan Whelan, into the game which gave the home side more of a balance in attack and defence.

East London had an advantage due to several injuries for Loughborough.

The home fans also added an extra boast to the on-court action, getting behind their team to score an impressive six point comeback, which saw both sides being separated by a point in the last minute of the fourth quarter.

Not Enough

Unfortunately, the home side ran out of time in the end as Peel missed the last chance of the game and an opportunity to take the win.

Point Guard Hollis Mitchell expressed his disappointment at falling short to the same opponents:

“It was disappointing that we can up a little short. It was a good season as I had fun with my teammates and coach.

“I feel like East London basketball are going in the right direction for sure”, said Mitchell.

East London will take the positives from the game as they look to go one step further next season and reach the final.
