East London Sport came away with two gold medals, one silver and one bronze as the 2020 BUCS indoor Athletics Championship got underway in Sheffield on Valentine’s Day.

Mariam Abdul Rashid took gold in the women’s 60-meter hurdles whilst Cheyanne Evans-Gray took gold in the women’s 60-metres, breaking the all-time BUCS indoor record for the event with a stunning time of 7.28 seconds.

Jordan Andrew grabbed silver in the men’s 60-metre sprint ambulant in a closely contested finish. Jonathon Ross grabbed bronze in the men’s 60-metre hurdles.

Golden Delight

Rashid spoke of her delight at securing gold on day one of the Championships; “It’s a great feeling,” said Rashid. “I’ve been working so hard for it – it’s a great relief.”

Evans-Gray was impressed with her time, admitting she was just focusing on trying to win the gold medal rather than breaking the BUCS indoor record.

“I’m amazed,” beamed record-breaker Evans-Gray. “I just wanted to win and so never thought about breaking the record for the discipline. It gives me great hope for the future.”

Close Call

Andrew was very pleased with his silver medal after day one in Sheffield, he commented: “I’m very happy with second place. It was a close race with very fine margins.”

Ross shared similar views to that of Andrew. “I’m kind of disappointed,” he said. “Bronze is good, but I’d have liked to have done a bit better.”
