After their first full season in the South Eastern 4B league East London Women’s Hockey team are looking to start the new season off with a positive result.

Their first fixture of the season will see them face London School of Economics Women’s 2nd team at home.

Past Struggles

The team which secured promotion to the South Eastern 4B league at the start of last year finished their first season in the league fifth. Due to struggles fielding a full team each week they only managed to secure eight points from eight games.

Despite not always playing with a complete team the side still managed to find victory from two matches.

Team Changes

The 2018/19 women’s squad.

The end of the 2018/19 season saw the departure of team captain Laura Pakenham due to graduating.

Several other team members graduated as well leaving the team with few remaining members for the upcoming season.

Alice Kindell has taken over the role of captain, as well as becoming chairperson of the club.

She hopes that the club will find more success this season and are able to grow their number of participants.

She said “I hope to encourage more women and men to take part in a new sport this season and work together as a team to win more games than we did last year.”

New Starts

Following a reshuffle to the BUCS leagues the team are now in the South Eastern Tier 5 league for North East London teams.

Their other opponents in the league are Royal Veterinary College, Queen Mary, London School of Economics, UCL and Imperial College London.

With a big recruitment effort to sign up more members to the team, there are numerous new players now joining the team.

Kindell is optimistic for a good start to the season on Wednesday.

“We have a great mixture of strong players this year, with many that are new to the team. I feel confident going into our first game that we will bring back a good result.” she said.

Push back is 3pm on Wednesday 9th October at Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre.
