The video for My Family, featuring East London artist BackRoad Gee, has won best hip hop/grime/rap video at the recent UK Video Music Awards (UKVMA) held at Camden’s Roundhouse.

The music video was released last September and now has over four million views on YouTube. The song has also made the charts and listens have been growing rapidly on Spotify and other platforms – which has attracted the attention of some big rap moguls such as Jay Z.

Aside from winning at the UKVMA awards, BRG’s song Ancestors featuring NSG is sixth on the Official UK afrobeat charts, and the rapper also appears with Jay Z in the new film The Harder They Fall.

Other UK artists who won include Dua Lipa for Love Again (best UK pop video); Celeste for Tonight Tonight (best RnB/soul video) Hot Chip feat. Jarvis for Straight To The Morning (best dance/electronic video) Beabadoobee for Last Day on Earth (best rock video); and James Blake for Say What You Will (best alternative video).

The UK Music Awards started in 2008 to celebrate the creativity that goes into making music videos and music films. The ceremony was held live for the first time since Covid, and was hosted by comedian Maisie Adams, with an audience of over 800 music industry professionals.
