After being rewarded with his first professional contract last month, 17-year-old Euan Williams is living the dream.

The exciting attacking midfielder has been working his way through the Charlton Athletic ranks over the past eight years, with academy director Steve Avory and manager Anthony Hayes able to spot his talent early on, and therefore delighted with the signature.

Impressive Numbers

Despite being just 16 at the time and a first-year scholar, Williams contributed 21 times for the Under 18’s last season.

However, misfortune with injuries this season has left Williams side-lined on more than one occasion, with the aim now for the youngster to build momentum after the great news.

Long Journey

Speaking to UEL, just a week prior to signing on professionally, Williams opened up about his journey at the club:

“I think I’ve been progressing really well over the last few years through the club’s academy. I’ve been here since I was nine, so I guess you could say I’m made here. Some of the boys have come later but I’ve been here from the start so I’m really hoping to push for that first team fairly soon.

“Me, Jeremy Santos and one of the other boys as well have all been here since under 7’s  and under 8’s, so for us three it’s been nice obviously building that relationship on the pitch and going through all the years together”.

 Academy Life

Williams also shared his views on life at the Charlton academy, and the valuable lessons it has taught him:

We’re taught to just work as hard as possible and that nothing that you want is too far away, as long as you work and get your head down and show confidence when you play you can succeed. Basically, just express yourself”.

Personal Goals

Injuries have unfortunately been a sad reality for Williams, and his frustrations of not being able to play are evident.

“I had an injury at the start of the season, and I haven’t been able to play many games yet. So, it would be to just get myself back into that team and help the boys win the league. From now to get seven, eight goals before the end of season would be great for me as well and popping up some with assists”.

 The future

“In three-five years, the aim is to be playing first team football at a Championship or Premier League club”.
