Peter Farrell has been in charge of his youth side for seven years, starting with them as young as 6/7, now at under-14’s it’s been a transitional year for his young side, “We were originally called Bruin JFC, which is a small grassroots team. This is actually our first season with Fisher, and it’s been amazing, the whole club has really welcomed us and really pulled out all the stops to make us happy, I have to give huge thanks to Chris Hissock who runs the youth section, he’s been first class.”

The Up And Downs Of Youth Coaching

Youth coaching is full of its ups and downs as Peter reflects “the best thing is seeing these young boys develop, if I can play a small part in that then my job is done. I love coaching, it’s so rewarding to see these young men push forward. I’ve had two players sign for professional clubs and I still have players that started with me seven years later.”

It comes with its difficulties too naturally “with players being at differing abilities I have to make tough decisions and it’s never easy letting a young boy down. I’m proud of everyone of my players and I have big hopes for several them, be that making it at professional level or at the very least a high semi-pro standard.”

It’s been a brilliant year for Peter and his side, who this weekend managed to secure their second league title (the top division in their age group) in two years, with three games spare “After last year’s league and cup double, we wanted to emulate that again, or even go one better and win the treble. Unfortunately we lost last week in the cup final 4-3 in a game we were by far the better team.”

Having had time now to reflect on their recent cup final defeat Peter said this, “We’re naturally disappointed as we feel we were the better side and maybe on another day the decisions go our way, and we win comfortably. I’m still extremely proud of my boys for making it to back-to-back finals, it’s been an incredible effort. It would have been lovely to win it again under the new Fisher name and would’ve been a perfect way to thank them all for making us feel so welcome. Hopefully, next season we can go one better!”

Fisher has a real family feel around it and it’s something everyone involved at the club is proud of, Peter ended by adding “Ajay (the men’s first team manager) has been so supportive, he’s been brilliant with us. He comes to the games and encourages the boys and constantly supports us. He’s been unreal with us, and we want to say a big thanks.”
