Gaming: 24/7

Every child’s dream is no work and all play; which is exactly what Nicholas Conley does every day.

I wake up, brush my teeth, go to the toilet then turn on my PlayStation 4.  For me gaming is not just a hobby but a lifestyle. It’s this urge to compete and the feeling of earning that well-deserved win at the end of each gaming day. That is what truly makes me smile. I love the way the PlayStation stick is and how it’s crafted so beautifully. It is black, sleek and fits perfectly in my ready-to-go hands. When I play her, I get to escape reality for a moment. I engage with the console and move from one realm to another, as if I’m in an alternating universe. My eyes are completely fixed on my multi-directional, smart TV and this is why I get totally immersed.

I play all sorts of games, from first person shooters to role-playing dramas. But nothing gets my heart rate accelerating more than an online multi-playing platform. I really enjoy the banter with the other players, because making fun of a sore loser is my hobby. Plus, the advantage of being able to play with other skilled players fills me with appreciation. It’s an opportunity to learn new skills every time I play with someone new. I score each interactive game with a fun meter created in my head, and challenge myself daily to become better.

As a young adult I can proudly call myself a gamer. Heck I’ll probably game until I’m dead and be fulfilled with life.  I see myself as a legend and would love to pass on the skills I have attained to my kids so they can keep up the family name as gaming champions.

But my mum on the other hand doesn’t agree. She sees my gaming talent as a waste of time and is constantly on my case about getting a job and moving out. I figure she’s tired of my yelling so inevitably I will eventually move out. But for now it’s all about me, food and my princess the PS4.  Yes, I call her my “princess” because that is what she is to me: a precious, loyal creation out to fulfil my every desire.

Now do I take time to sleep? All of maybe 3-4 hours a night. But who needs sleep when you can game? Sleeping is for the weak and true gaming is for the almighty. I encourage my friends to play the games I enjoy so we can play together. Some are more enthusiastic then others but it’s still fun and I’ll still continue to play. And please don’t underestimate the skills required to be a successful gamer. Anyone can play, but it takes the truly talented masters to complete the games with platinum trophies. These games take time and precision, and involve hand to eye contact, problem solving, and sometimes even nerve busting skills to complete the challenges.

So, before all you non-gamers judge us on how much time we spend on games, just know you’re missing out on the best parts of your life.  I use the skills I learn on the game in real life and I’ve turned out just fine…. somewhat. Gaming is knowledge, and knowledge is power, let it be known.
