West Ham make their first appearance in the Carabao Cup this season where they take on Championship highflyers Blackburn Rovers this Wednesday.

The Hammers will hope to bounce back from back-to-back league defeats, suffering a last-minute defeat at home to Crystal Palace on Sunday. This result leaves West Ham 15th in the league, two points from the relegation zone.

Blackburn have started life under new manager Jon Dahl Tomasson well, sitting second in The Championship. They are coming off a 1-0 victory against Huddersfield which takes them within two points of current leaders Burnley.

Payet bagged a brace against Blackburn in 2016

It’s been six years since these two sides last met, when the Hammers’ much loved playmaker Dimitri Payet scored twice as West Ham thrashed Blackburn 5-1 in the FA Cup fifth round.

The Hammers enter at this stage of the competition after securing European football last season, while Rovers progressed to the third round of the Carabao Cup by beating Bradford 2-1 back in August.

West Ham have never won the Carabao Cup. Last season, West Ham went on a memorable cup run, beating Manchester United at Old Trafford and title holders Manchester City before losing to Tottenham Hotspur in the fifth round.

Team News

David Moyes is likely to make several changes to the side that lost to Palace on Sunday.

Maxwell Cornet is still doubtful for the Hammers after suffering a calf injury back in October.

Tomasson is also expected to rest key players ahead of a crucial Lancashire derby against Burnley on Saturday.

Blackburn have no injuries and suspensions heading into this game.
