Hipster vs Authentic (3): Ducking With Chopsticks!

To coincide with the Chinese New Year celebrations in central London on 10 February, Chinese food is what this week’s battle is about. Once again, the format is the same: a trendified version versus something from the no-frills, old school. This being the Year of the Pig, I decided to compare…..roast duck with noodles from two different Chinese restaurants.

It may not look appetising but you’d be pleasantly surprised!

King’s Chinese takeaway is in East London. I bought roast duck with noodles via the application Just Eat, and it cost me £6.50. It turned out to be a well-furnished plate of really good food (except, being a takeaway, it came in a carton). There was nothing to criticise, the duck was well-seasoned as it should be. Perfection at a great price, affordable for everyone.

The second restaurant I tried was Lotus Leaf in Westfield (Stratford). I ordered roast duck with oyster sauce noodles for £9.95. Though still affordable, it was nearly 50 percent more expensive than King’s. But that doesn’t mean the food was better. As matter of fact, the noodles were so sticky and tasteless I couldn’t finish my plate. On the other hand, the duck was really good, especially the sauce with a delectable mix of sweet and salty flavours.

Stylish but not as tasty as it looks!

Overall, however, King’s Chinese takeaway was better than Lotus Leaf on both taste and price. I declare the old school takeaway is the outright winner!
