Homecoming Show in South East London

A former student of the University of East London (UEL) has been included in the launch exhibition of Issue 2 of arts mag Yellowzine.

The show runs till May 11th at 198 Gallery in Brixton, and features the work of former UEL film student-turned-model/photographer/filmmaker 22 year-old Abdourahman N’Jiehad.

Yellowzine is a  Person of Colour (POC) publication run by a couple of British-born Nigerians, Olu and Aishat, and is devoted to ‘artwork by minority ethnic artists based in the UK.’

Swedish-born Abdourahman (Abdou) lives in South East London – Peckham SE15 – and has modelled in Burberry and Prada campaigns – mostly through the Nii Modelling Agency. Abdou’s most recent project – which is featured in the Yellowzine launch – saw him travel back home to Gambia, where he reconnected with his brother who he had not seen for six years.

In an Instagram post sent out at the beginning of the trip, Abdou wrote: Since I’ve been in Gambia/Senegal it has been such a big learning curve , creatively & socially.”  The project is conveniently entitled ‘Nyibisi’ which means ‘Homecoming’ in Abdou’s native tongue, and features an array of warm portraits that acts as a window into West African daily life.

If you don’t make it to the exhibition, Abdou’s work can be found on his Instagram page for now, but he will be shortly be launching his own website.

The 198 Gallery is on Railton Road, Herne Hill, and is available for rent.
