Charlton Athletic suffered a 2-1 defeat at the DW Stadium on Saturday, as hosts Wigan Athletic continued their push for automatic promotion.

Live-lee Start

Johnnie Jackson’s men got off to the perfect start after just seven minutes when Adam Matthews delivered a curling cross into the box which was met by on-loan midfielder Elliot Lee, whose headed effort into the ground bounced into the roof of the net.

The Latics were then gifted a glorious chance to restore parity when Sean Clare brought down Callum Lang in the 26th minute, with referee Tom Nield quick to point to the spot.

Irish forward Will Keane made no mistake converting from the spot, rifling his effort down the middle and into the roof of Craig MacGillivray’s goal.

Super Sub Stephen

In the second half both teams struggled to create chances and the game looked like it was petering out to a draw before substitute Stephen Humphrys made an instant impact off the bench in the 77th minute.

Having been on the pitch for a matter of minutes, the forward latched onto Jack Whatmough’s nod down to prod home the winner.

Wigan’s win keeps them in second place in Sky Bet League One, nine points behind table toppers Rotherham United but, crucially, with three games in hand on the runaway leaders, with the two facing off at the Millers’ AESSEAL New York Stadium on Friday.

As for the Addicks, the defeat leaves them in 14th place, nine points clear of the relegation zone and 14 points off the play-offs; a comfortable mid-table position reflective of the progress made under Jackson, who took over when the club were in the relegation zone having registered just two wins in 13 games.

Charlton are next in action on Saturday as they look to return to winning ways against Oxford United at The Valley.
