Kieran Baldwin looks ahead to a busy week for UEL men’s football

All four teams are in league action on Wednesday afternoon.

The UEL men’s 1sts team play their sixth game of the season, and are the only side at home this week for UEL. They take on St Mary’s University College 1sts at Hackney Marshes, and the hosts have added incentive to win.

UEL have won their last four matches since their opening defeat away at St Mary’s. Since then Yassain Abidou’s men have gone from strength to strength and sit top of the league. The University Hertfordshire are currently in second place three points behind UEL, but have a game in hand.

UEL’s form is more than impressive. They are currently on a five game unbeaten run in all competitions and have conceded just five goals in that time, despite winning promotion only last season.

St Mary’s fortunes have taken a turn for the worse following their opening day win. They sit bottom of the table, but have only played two league games. They lost their second game and have since been deducted points for failing to meet regulations.

The official BUCS website says St Mary’s did not submit their county FA affiliation number in time for the start of the season.

Impressive

UEL 2nds travel to University of Medway 1sts, with the visitors looking to maintain their good start to the league season. Despite an early exit in the cup, the 2nds have made an improved start compared to previous seasons.

They sit top of their division on goal difference, with seven points from two wins and a draw. Their impressive goal scoring form has given them a goal difference of +7 with University of Middlesex 1st also on 7 points but with an inferior goal difference.

Medway 1sts sit just a point behind UEL after three games, following a defeat against Middlesex 1sts. UEL were able to get a point against the same side at the start of the campaign.

UEL go into the game as favourites against the newly promoted side, despite being away from home.

UEL 3rds travel to the University of Queen Mary 3rds, with the East Londoners seeking to get back to winning ways. UEL 3rd have had difficult start to their campaign, with mixed results in both league and cup.

UEL are currently third in the table but go into the game following back of back-to-back defeats. UEL started the season, with a 3-1 home win against the University of London Met 2nds but have struggled since, conceding nine goals in the next two games.

Queen Marys head into the game without a league win this season and currently sit bottom. Last season, UEL did the double over Queen Marys and will look to continue their good record.

UEL lost to league leaders Essex 4th team a week ago, who are now three points clear of UEL.

UEL 4ths will finally begin their campaign, as they travel to St Mary’s 5th side in search of three points. The 4ths are a newly formed team this season and enter the South Eastern league in division 8A.

St Mary’s currently sit in second, after their first game of the season.
