Daniil Medvedev has defeated Dominic Thiem 4-6, 7-6(2), 6-4 in the final of the ATP Finals.
It was a fantastic match in the last game being held in the O2 Arena before the season ending tournament moves to Turin in Italy next year.
Story Of The Match
The world number three, Dominic Thiem, who narrowly lost in the final of this event last year, took the opening set 6-4.
The break of serve came at 2-2 with Medvedev letting a 40-0 lead slip. The Russian lost five straight points to give Thiem the break that would help him win the set.
The second set went to a tiebreak, Medvedev won it 7-2 winning seven points in a row.
Medvedev came into this match with nine wins in his last nine having won the Paris Masters this month prior to the ATP Finals. His confidence began to show in the third set breaking the Thiem serve at 2-2 in the deciding set then sealing victory 6-4.

In the post match interview champion, Daniil Medvedev, said “first of all what a match. I mean one of my best victories, three sets against an amazing player.”
Runner Up, Dominic Thiem, said in his post match interview, “of course I’m disappointed but at the same time I’m really proud of the performances all week. Daniil really deserved it, an amazing match, congrats for another great year.”
“Changing of the Guard?”
With Djokovic, Nadal & Federer all ageing, tennis fan have been wondering who may take over at the top of the game. Medvedev and Thiem both reaching the final having beaten Nadal and Djokovic along the way, makes them the leading candidates.
Thiem, having won his first Grand Slam title this year at the US Open is probably still favourite to takeover. He also has a fantastic record against the “big three”. Thiem has won 5 of his last 7 vs Djokovic, 3 of his last 4 vs Nadal and 5 of his last 6 vs Federer.
However, this victory for Daniil Medvedev, aged 24, will make many believe he could also be the future of tennis.
In The Doubles 
In the final of the doubles Wesley Koolhof and Nikola Mektic defeated Edouard Roger-Vasselin and Jurgen Melzer 6-2 3-6 10-5 to claim the trophy. The fifth seeds finished the season on a high only joined forces in January of a disrupted tennis year.
