There were mixed feelings after two big volleyball games at SportsDock on Wednesday as the mens’ second team clinched the league title whilst the women’s second slipped to defeat

Heading into the match, both teams were looking to clinch their respective leagues with wins in what had the potential to be a special day for Volleyball at UEL.

Although the men saw off Greenwich with relative ease, the women were put to the sword by the University of Arts and lost 3-1 to prolong their wait for the title.

Dominant Display

The UEL Men’s 2nd volleyball team put on an impressive performance as they dispatched University of Greenwich 3-0, with all three sets controlled by the home side.

The result never looked in doubt and UEL were always on top against a lacklustre Greenwich team who never took control of the game, with UEL dominating the visitors, winning in straight sets 25-16, 25-18, 25-16, wrapping up a league win in style.

Brushing off their local counterparts with complete ease, they look well worthy of a title win and will no doubt be ecstatic in the manor in which they secured the league.

Poor Performance

Just under two hours after the men’s triumph, it was the women’s team who took to the court next in a bid to achieve that of their male counterparts. However, they were met by a strong University of Arts team who controlled the game from the off to record an impressive win against the league leaders.

It was predicted that it would be a routine victory from UEL as they had beaten the Arts uni 3-0 in the reverse fixture and hadn’t dropped a set in their last 5 games. But the University of Arts had different ideas as they blew away the hosts to tighten the gap at the top of the table.

Costly Errors

The visitors started off strong and were helped by poor mistakes from UEL as they stormed in to an early 5 point lead. UEL seemed to up their game and quickly reduced the lead, moving in to an 8-7 lead.

However, the Arts uni wouldn’t sit down and kept themselves always within touch. UEL took the first set 25-18 as they pulled away in the latter stages of the first set, but it wasn’t enough to down a strong University of Arts side.

The win in the first set that was as good as it got for the hosts as the University of Arts blitzed them and won the next 3 sets by very convincing scores of 25-15, 25-12 and 25-18.

The Arts uni simply blew away the home team, who unlike the visitors never managed to eradicate avoidable mistakes from their game and perhaps the occasion proved to be too much as the Arts uni played with a ‘nothing to lose attitude’ and stormed through the awaiting champions.
