Non-League Playoff Race Heats Up

Thurrock

Mitchell Young reviews the weekend’s action for the local sides from in the Ryman Division One North.

Thurrock and AFC Hornchurch both dropped three vital home points at the weekend, leaving their playoff hopes in the balance as it tightens up at the top.

Hornchurch slipped to a 2-0 defeat to promotion pushing Cheshunt, who move up to seventh just six points off the playoffs – while the Urchins fall to third with no win in their last four matches.

Another worry for Jimmy McFarlane’s men is that they have played three more games than the teams around them, meaning they could face clinging on to the final playoff place.

Thurrock also failed to grab any points at Ship Lane to suffer back to back defeats, as they lost 2-1 to Witham Town. Thurrock now sit fourth.

Manager Mark Stimson said: “To get no points from this game was very frustrating. For the first 85 minutes we did everything but score with the Witham goal keeper in outstanding form.”

“Then out of nowhere they break and get a penalty, we then had to go for it and gave a poor second goal away,” Stimson told Thurrock FC’s official website.

Despite a late goal from David Cowley, Thurrock could not save a point but they do have games in hand to rekindle their form.

Romford were unable to extend the gap between themselves and the relegation zone, as their away game with Haringey Borough was postponed.

The Boro currently sit six points off the drop zone and will have an eye on the teams below who play on Tuesday, while they rest until Saturday when they face Bury Town.
