Science fiction and fantasy are not the genres I watch Netflix for. In fact I have tried to avoid them as best as I can. But when I heard about Ragnarok, a Norwegian Netflix show based on Norse mythology, I decided to give it a go.

I was mainly tempted by the amount of promo that one of the lead actors – Herman Tømmeraas – unloaded onto Instagram. You see I already knew him from other popular Norwegian shows. Another familiar Netflix face in Ragnarok is Jonas Strand Gravli, who plays the lead in 22 July.

The story follows new high school student Magne, who has recently moved to the mysterious town of Edda with his mother and younger brother. Soon after arriving Magne discovers something unusual both both himself and the town.

Key to the plot is the suspicion that a strange form of pollution that is affecting Edda might be the fault of the fifth richest family in Norway, The Jutuls. These elements combine to set up a mystery that Magne has to solve.

Ragnarok delivers all the elements that many of us look for in a good Netflix show, including love, friendship, loss, and mystery – and all accompanied by plenty of cliff hangers!

The fact that Norwegian heartthrob Tømmeraas turns out to be a member of the Jutuls family made this show particularly fascinating for me, and for all those fans who couldn’t wait for the series to start.

And despite being in Norwegian, Ragnarok is proving popular all over the world.

If you are a fan of romance and drama, then you may want to leave your dislike of science fiction and fantasy to one side and give this show a chance, because you might just find you end up loving it as much as I did.
