The first series of this British show launched in January, with eight episodes about the lives of horny teenagers.

Sixteen-year-old Otis lives with his mom, the sex therapist Dr Jean F. Milburn. But Otis is ashamed of her profession and will only tell Eric, who comes from a religious black family but is openly gay. Otis is the only virgin amongst a bunch of sexually active fellow school mates who are all confused and having relationship problems. This is what prompts Otis’s friend Maeve to suggest they set up their own sex therapy business, with Otis doing the therapy.

It’s a perfect plot line for a show that wants to attract teenagers who can’t control their hormones and want to try new things out but don’t want to ask adults for advice. As a teenager myself I can relate to this, because teenagers don’t want to be judged.

Sex Education is what they call a ‘dramedy’ – which means the drama is as important as the comedy. With this show the serious ‘dramatic’ side could help do something really positive, which is to get teenagers to understand themselves better.

And if a teen wants to find a character to relate to, in Sex Education they probably will, because every type of teen you’ve ever know is here, including the bully, the geek, the fashionista and – of course – that mysterious girl that no one wants to talk to.

However it’s worth warning you that a lot of the material is explicit and for me some of it was too crude. In other words you need to be old enough to watch it.

For those who aren’t easily shockable the good news is that another series is on the way.
