Whose Premier League transfer gamble will pay off?

January’s Premier League transfer window brought a number of surprises and also a few predictable signings.

Surprise, surprise!

West Ham who are currently on a European adventure (last 16 in the Europa League), and pursuing a top four/Europa league spot and in the 5th round of the FA Cup, brought in zero players. Similar to Manchester United who are also contending for a top-four finish as well as a Champions League push.

‘Money, money, money, money… Money!’

Spending big, the newly crowned ‘Richest club in the world’ Newcastle United have spent not only the most in the Premier League but also in the world.

Big Spenders

Club/League/Spend

1. Newcastle –  English Premier League –  £86m

2. Juventus – Serie A – £81.5m

3. Barcelona – La Liga – £54.6m

4. Liverpool – English Premier League – £37.8m

5. Everton – English Premier League – £31.5m

6. Aston Villa – English Premier League – £25.2m

7. Tottenham – English Premier League – £24.3m

8. Fiorentina – Serie A – £23.5m

9. Zenit – Russian Premier League – £22.7m

10. Watford – English Premier League – £20.1m

Newcastles spending is understandable with an abundance of wealth and in the midst of a relegation battle, they have decided to roll the dice by bringing in five new signings for a total of £86 million to reignite their fight for survival.

While only brining in one player and fighting at the top of the table, Liverpool spent the second largest amount (£37.8m) in the Premier League as they aim to close deficit to Manchester City to win their second league title in three years.

West Ham’s decision to not add to their squad raised many eyebrows as their strong and determined squad may begin to show signs of wear and tear as the season draws to a climax, and games come around thick and fast and with more at stake.
