Scottish actor Sean Connery died aged 90 on Saturday 31 October 2020. He passed away peacefully in his sleep in the Bahamas, surrounded by his loved ones, after reportedly suffering from dementia for some years.

Connery was widely admired as a true Hollywood legend, primarily for his iconic performances as the original 007 James Bond.

Indiana Jones star Harrison Ford paid tribute, saying: “God we had fun – if he’s in heaven, I hope they have golf courses. Rest in peace, dear friend”.

Apart form the best-loved Bond, Connery’s other notable performances included Colonel Arburthnot in Murder on the Orient Express (1974).

As he grew older, his performances and his charm did not diminish. Instead he won an Oscar for The Untouchables and a Bafta for The Name of the Rose – both made in the same year (1987). Another strong performance was Highlander (1986).

Connery was knighted in 2000 for services to the film industry; his knighthood is said to have been delayed for some years because of his strong support for Scottish nationalism.

Before acting, Connery was a milkman and body-builder. He took elocution lessons but never lost his accent which eventually became his trademark. He retired in 2011.

R.I.P Sir Sean Connery (1930-2020): your talent and charisma will remain in our hearts.
