As a part of West Ham U23s brilliant start to the 2019/20 season that has seen them reach the top of the Premier League 2 Division 2 table, one particular player has been at the heart of this success.

Attacking Versatility

As an attacking midfielder by trade, Anthony Scully has found fine goalscoring form this term playing at centre forward, registering 15 goals in 18 games in the league – a tally matched only by his teammate Nathan Holland, who has recently joined Oxford United on loan.

The Irishman has been one of the main attacking threats for Dmitri Halajko’s side this season, working as the spearhead in a system that marries strong defensive discipline with quick attacking play.

Scully, who is the son of former QPR wide-man Tony Scully, has already been voted the Premier League 2 Player Of The Month for September, while also being nominated for the award in October – a testament to his fantastic season so far.

Reaping The Rewards

Having broken into the squad in the latter stages of last season, it did not take long for the blond-haired Irishman to make his mark at the start of this footballing year, with a goal in his first start against top-of-the-table rivals Manchester United.

He then went on to score six goals in the Hammers next three games, while also setting up a couple for his fellow teammates, which shows that he offers more than goals to his game. His form that will surely be grabbing the attention of first team coach David Moyes, especially considering the lacklustre performances of the senior squad.

Scully’s form throughout the season was rewarded his first call up to the Irish U21 side; the 20-year old has already been called up to all age groups of his national side.

Hopeful Halajko

New Irons head coach Halajko will be hoping that the Irons’ talisman will be able to continue in a similar vein to the start of this season, as his goals have been so integral to the success that they have so far achieved.

Whilst West Ham are placed at the summit of the Premier League 2 Division 2 table with seven remaining games, it will be interesting to see if this Hammers side can push on and claim the title that they are most certainly on track for.

With the January transfer window coming to a close, Halajko will he hoping that Scully isn’t the latest of his talented crop of players to be loaned to a football league club during this crucial stage of the season.
