Tough Start For The Lions

Marcus Lee reflects on the challenging start to Millwall's season

Millwall have had a tough start to the season and currently sit in 20th place after two wins, four draws and six losses and are now only one point above the dreaded relegation zone.

A Mixed August

The Lions started with a good 2-2 draw at home to one of the title favourites Middlesbrough, but may have felt they should have taken all three points after conceding two very late goals from Martin Braithwaite and George Friend.

Two goalless draws followed this game, one away to Blackburn Rovers and the other at home to Gillingham in the Carabao Cup which the Lions then won on penalties. Frank Lampard then visited The Den with his Derby County side, with Jake Cooper and Shaun Williams getting on the score sheet.

Two losses put a stop to Millwall’s momentum. The first of those coming when the Lions lost to Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough and the second away to Rotherham United.

However, a win against struggling League One side Plymouth Argyle in the Carabao Cup saw Millwall end August on a high.

September Disappointment

Recently relegated Premier League side, Swansea claimed all three points when they travelled to The Den.

Rivals, Leeds United, followed and again left Millwall disappointed after a Jed Wallace first-half goal was cancelled out by a late strike from Jack Harrison in the 89th minute.

Four more losses followed for Millwall in September. A 2-0 loss to West London’s Queens Park Rangers started this, then a 2-0 loss to one of the title favourites, West Bromwich Albion followed. The Lions Carabao Cup journey came to an end, as Premier League side Fulham, won the game comfortably 3-1.

Four days later Millwall hosted Sheffield United in a five goal thriller. Sheffield United took the lead before Millwall fought back to take the game to 2-1. With just over 10 minutes to go, the Blades produced a thrilling come back to take all three points and heap more misery on the south-east Londoners.

October Improvement

The Lions have only played two games so far this month, the first was away to Nottingham Forest where this time it was Millwall who grabbed a late equaliser. Lee Gregory, who is the current top goal scorer for the Lions with five goals, scored a 91st minute equaliser to give Millwall a valuable point.

Millwall’s most recent game saw them playing host to manager-less, Aston Villa. Tammy Abraham gave Villa an early lead in the seventh minute, but 19 minutes later Shane Ferguson brought Millwall level. Then just three minutes in to the second half Tom Elliott gave the Lions the lead and a valuable three points to drag Millwall out of the relegation zone and in to 20th.

Millwall now have a break before their next game due to the international fixtures. This gives time for Neil Harris and his players to rest before heading to Reading, who sit one spot below them, on October 20th .
