UEL Women’s Basketball Aim to Tip-Off in Style

The 2018-19 BUCS fixtures get underway this week with the UEL Women’s Basketball team returning to action. Joe Havens-Cassidy previews the match.

The UEL Women's Basketball team in action last season

The UEL women are ready to take on a new challenge this Wednesday at 4pm where they will face Cardiff Met in their first game of the season at SportsDock.

The team will be looking to continue their impressive form from last year after going unbeaten on their path to winning the South Eastern 1A league.

They were a class above almost every opponent they faced last season. However, promotion to the Premier South means their league games will be harder than ever. This league boasts some of the best women’s basketball in the country including the undefeated champions of last season, Essex 1sts.

Test of Character

It will be a challenge of not only the team’s ability, but their mental toughness as well. The jump in level of competition will be a real test for UEL as they won a lot of games pretty comfortably last season. Mental toughness will be key as the team will face greater adversities than ever before.

Winning a league in the season straight after earning promotion is almost unheard of. However, judging by last season’s performances the UEL women have shown they can beat anyone, and a league title is by no means out of the question.

Enticing Encounter

UEL’s opponents on the opening day, Cardiff Met, are coming off the back of a very respectable season themselves going 5-5 in the league and collecting 15 points. This was good enough for fourth place in the South Premier league last season and they will be looking to improve on that finish this year.

UEL are undoubtedly coming off a better season than their opponents. However, players will have graduated, and new additions will be playing for both teams.

This match can really define what kind of season it is going to be for the UEL women. It is too early to call this game a ‘must win,’ but it is definitely a must watch.
