The UEL women’s netball first team won the game with a score of 45-8 as they played against the University of Canterbury women’s 3rd team.

Led by their captain Roxy Le Brocq, the UEL side have found a way to keep themselves in the title race after losing two of their previous games against King’s College and LSE.

Both teams matched-up well during the game, however, the UEL ladies were able to accumulate a lot of interceptions throughout the whole game which proved to be one of the key reasons behind the dominant win.

Hunger

UEL’s scoring displayed the fight and hunger the team has for the division title as they look to face the University of Kent fourth team and Kings College sixth team in the remaining two games of the season.

Coach Owolabi remains optimistic “We are aiming to finish top… We have been winning by big margins so that might help us in the long run.”

Kyra Boyce, the UEL goal keeper, made her comeback since she injured her ankle in a match that took place near the end of last year.

Boyce played extremely well as she marked her opponent and made sure she took charge of the goal third to deter the University of Canterbury from scoring.

On the other hand, Gemima H Eshimu, the UEL’s centre and Wing Attacker also won player of the match, voted by the University of Canterbury team as she showed her agility skills as well as her defensive vision in an excellent all-around game.

Eshimu received well-deserved praise from her head coach, Bisi Owolabi after the game “She showed how much of a strong athlete she is carrying the well up and down the court and controlling the game.”

The University of Canterbury entered this game with two wins and now have lost six since the start of the BUCS Netball season.

This currently puts them fifth for the ratio of the games won and lost. Their next game will be against LSE women’s third team who are sitting second in the 8B division.

Head-to-Head

Both sides will be going head-to-head next week, Wednesday at 2 pm in University of Canterbury’s home ground.

As UEL continue their way through the league, they are ready and geared up to play next week Wednesday 2nd March at 4 pm in the Sportsdock. They will be playing against University of Kent who they previously beat 46-23.
