VIVA Glam’s World AIDS Day Fund

MAC Cosmetic steps up on World AIDS Day

Creative Commns

The famous makeup brand MAC Cosmetic has raised over $500 million through the sale of the viva glam lipsticks.

MAC Cosmetics has been a long-time pioneer in the fight to end HIV, AIDS and the stigma surrounding it. In 1994, the devastating impact HIV and AIDS was having on the fashion and makeup industry motivated Frank Angelo and Frank Toskan, the company founders, to establish the MAC AIDS Fund, now known as the VIVA Glam Fund.

They released the first VIVA Glam lipstick in collaboration with iconic drag queen RuPaul; with 100% of the proceeds going towards helping men, women and children affected by HIV and AIDS.

Every year since then, MAC Cosmetics has collaborated with cultural icons whose ideals and values align with the charity, to release limited edition VIVA Glam products. Alumni of the campaign include the likes of Boy George, Lady Gaga, Mary J. Blige, Lil Kim and many more.

MAC also sells 3 permanent VIVA Glam lipsticks that are available all year round. By using this fund-raising technique, the VIVA Glam Fund has raised over $500 million to date. The money has been used to provide approximately 10,000 grants to over 1,800 different programmes world-wide.

In the UK and Ireland, the profits from the sale of VIVA GLAM lipsticks is donated to organisations that support the health and rights of people of all age, gender and race.

This year, MAC has released the VIVA Glam 1 lipstick in collaboration with Spanish singer Rosalia, to celebrate 26 years of giving 100%.

The advertisement for the collaboration came out last week, starring with the Spanish singer.

They have also introduced 3 limited edition VIVA Glam lipsticks to celebrate the late artist Keith Haring, who died of HIV/AIDS in 1990. Haring’ artwork has become synonymous with the times when the HIV/AIDS epidemic was at its’ peak during the 80s and 90s.

John Demsey, executive group president at Estée Lauder Group, said, ‘This new collection is our nod back to where we come from and we’re using it, face forward, to project a brighter future.’.

The lipsticks shades are red, blue and yellow; inspired by Harings’ love for bright, primary colours. The packaging is also adorned with iconic Haring motifs.

This World Aids Day, you can help fight HIV, AIDS and the stigma by purchasing a VIVA Glam lipstick for yourself or even as a Christmas gift. Pop into your local MAC counter and ask one of their trained makeup artists for a VIVA Glam lip demo to find your perfect shade or get them online from Mac Cosmetics website.

All VIVA Glam lipsticks retail for £17.50 and are available in-store and on www.maccosmetics.co.uk
