Wacky Wikileaks Vigil

Matt Anderson reports from a protest bordering on the absurd.

Wikileaks co-founder Julian Assange has been holed up in the Ecuadorian embassy in London for more than two years, having fled there to avoid extradition to Sweden following allegations of rape and sexual assault.

Earlier this month, protesters gathered outside the embassy to affirm their support for Assange’s stance against ‘state terrorism’. But their vigil also highlighted how few people were there to take part in it; and it ended on a discordant note among the protesters themselves.

It used to be said that history happens first as tragedy, then a second time as farce. Perhaps these two aspects – tragedy and farce – are now occurring simultaneously.
