World Match Play could be washout as weather worsens

Mark Ferguson reports on the weather threatening the upcoming golf tournament in Kent.

A golf event scheduled for October, in England, threatened by rain? Surely not.

After a surprisingly splendid September which saw the Ryder Cup staged in Scotland without interruption and instead glorious sunshine, it looks like normal service has been resumed with heavy rain casting major doubts over this week’s World Match Play event at the London Golf Club in Kent.

Bad weather conditions are proving to be a real problem lately on the European Tour with last week’s Portugal Masters reduced to 36 holes due to downpours in the Algarve.

Similar conditions have hit the south of England this week and a washout could be on the cards with fairways flooded and greens holding a vast amount of water, making the course simply unplayable.

Unfortunately, those conditions look set to stay and more rain is forecast over the next 48 hours.

However, there is some cause for optimism due to the fact that a 16-man match play event works in the favour of the organisers as opposed to a full field.

A 17th contender may have to be added to that field as it looks like Mother Nature will definitely have a big part to play over the next five days.
