After We Fell: Movie Review

Shrin Ghayad falls for the movie adaptation

As a fan of the ‘After’ books I was very excited to get to go to the exclusive Amazon Prime UK screening of After We Fell.

Before the movie I had time to eat and drink while exploring the displays which included behind-the-scenes footage and some exclusive interviews. They also had a photo booth and temporary tattoos for us all. Everyone was friendly, which got us hyped up for watching the film.

When we entered the movie theatre our first surprise was the goodie bag waiting for us in our seats. It included a t-shirt, mask, notebook, pen, and chocolate.

Then right before the movie we got our second surprise: Josephine Langford, who plays Tessa Young, appeared on the screen! When she said that we didn’t have to like the movie everyone laughed – me included as you can tell from the way I can’t hold the camera still in the film below.

After We Fell is the latest movie from the ‘After’ book and movie series. It is based on a fan fiction about Harry Styles written by Anna Todd on Wattpad. She wrote five books in this franchise about the love story of Tessa Young and Hardin Scott.

The movie starts with the cliffhanger that ended the previous movie After We Collided, when Tessa met her long-lost father. It then moves forwards as Hardin and Tessa fight over where Tessa will move after graduation. Hardin wants her to move to London, where he is originally from. But Tessa decides to take a job in Seattle instead. And so begins a long-distance relationship in which they have to deal with jealousy and other struggles.

Langford as Tessa Young and Hero Fiennes Tiffin as Hardin Scott perform mostly well, but the script is just too weak for them. Though they do their best to deliver depth of character, the dialogue is just not up to it, and instead they always end up having sex.

Fiennes Tiffin is weakest when he over does the ‘bad boy’ by looking at anyone who wants to speak to his precious Tessa as if he wants to kill them. Even when he’s speaking to Langford, he can’t help looking angry. Maybe he needs to have more fun and not take the role too seriously.

But Langford proves to the book’s lovers that she is the right person to play the heroine. Her portrayal of Tessa’s transformation from shy little girl to the powerful woman that she is becoming, is wonderful.

The movie was predicable to everyone who knows the books, and easy enough to follow. But for those who don’t know the books it could get a bit confusing, especially if you didn’t watch the first two movies. I also felt the film tried to fit in too many plot lines from the book into 90 minutes.

But as a fan of the books, I have to admit that I enjoyed watching the movie too – and even cried a little bit while during my favourite scenes.

You can now find the movie on Amazon Prime UK.
