This years’s Apple Music Awards Artist of The Year is Wizkid, and I was lucky enough to see him perform at his recent O2 concert.

After almost two years of Covid restrictions, WizKid fans nationwide were ecstatic when he announced that during his Made in Lagos tour, WizKid would be performing in London at the O2 for two dates.

Tickets sold out completely within hours, and so by popular demand he announced a third date and these tickets too sold out very quickly.

It is no surprise that this was such a popular event as it has been an amazing year for the artist. Essence by WizKid featuring Tems is the first Nigerian song in history to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 and the Billboard Global 200; with Justin Bieber also featuring on the remix.

The Grammy award winning artist promised fans there would be special guest performances which just increased demand for these tickets, some of which were going for double their price online. Fortunately, I was able to get my hands on one of these tickets and attended the concert!

Upon arrival to the O2, you could feel the vibrant energy of the fans, with some singing and dancing together while waiting in line for security checks. We arrived fairly ahead of time, but when we finally got into the area, it was already filled with thousands of people in their Sunday best and ready to go.

It was lovely to see how much time and effort everyone had put into their outfits or makeup, or both! It was an indication of how important the event really was.

The concert itself did not disappoint. Everyone present – and all from different races, cultures and background – came together to sing along to every single song. People had their phones recording while screaming the lyrics at the top of their lungs.

One of the best things about the night, aside from Burna Boy making an appearance, was how safe and comfortable I felt.

Given that the arena was, we naturally had concerns. But the concert goers, including myself, felt safe. This was because firstly we all had to present negative COVID tests to get in, and secondly because WizKid made sure to stop the concert every 20 minutes to ensure everyone was okay and that no one felt sick or was injured.

The atmosphere was energetic, positive and definitely bought people from all walks of life together to share in a special moment.
