After a close fought 19-14 win over Bishops Stortford last weekend saw Blackheath win their third game in a row, they are back on the road as they face early season strugglers Cambridge. Despite being so early in the season, Blackheath are in need of victory to stay within touching distance of leaders Richmond.

Recent Form

Blackheath have overcome a relatively slow start in the last month or so, winning four of their last five games. Recent wins over Bishops Stortford, Plymouth Albion and the Rams, as well as a dominant display against Hull Ionians has seen the South-East London climb up to third in the table. However, a comprehensive 43-18 loss away at mid-table Sale FC has kept them in check and reminded Blackheath there is a lot more work to be done in order to secure promotion.

For Cambridge, their form has been indifferent in recent weeks. Back-to-back wins over Rosslyn Park and Canterbury were sandwiched by defeats at the hands of Sale FC and Old Elthamians. Add to that last week’s draw with Plymouth and it sees Cambridge sitting 13th with 20 points, just two points away from the relegation zone.

Force

A factor in Blackheath’s strong season so far has been their away form, winning four of their five games, the only defeat coming in the aforementioned Sale game. Combined with the fact that Cambridge have won under half of their home games this season, it sets Blackheath as big favourites.

However, last season’s head to head could suggest otherwise. Both teams were able to win their away fixtures against each other last season, with Blackheath winning 43-24 at Grantchester Road in October, and Cambridge taking a 27-22 win at Well Hall in February.

The game kicks off at Grantchester Road at 3pm on Saturday 9th November.
