The upcoming track is being funded by Tower Hamlets Public Health with £10,000, and another £87,000 contributed by developers.

Since the 2012 Olympic Games, the charity Access Sports has been working with all five Olympic host boroughs to build BMX tracks and to keep the BMX Olympic legacy alive.

The Growing Gap

A key factor on why the development of the second BMX facility is happening is due to the popularity of the Mile End BMX Track.

Mayor John Biggs told The Docklands and East Advertiser that “It is great to see this cycling track delivered in the east of the borough at Langdon Park. It is a fantastic new facility and will contribute to healthy activity in our parks.”

The location of the new development at Langdon Park is a perfect place for a BMX Track. It is close to the Spotlight Centre, a state of the art facility for young people, run by Poplar HARCA.

It will provide a great outdoor facility for older youths to access an area of the borough where there are limited facilities of this type.

The track is designed to deliver to a great standard and be long-lasting. It will promote and increase health activities, promote cycling and BMX Bike riding skills, provide volunteer work scheme for young people, and encourage use of the park and help deter anti-social behaviour.

The Launch

The development of the Langdon Park BMX Bike Track will increase the local offer as young people in the east end borough are traveling to Mile End where the other BMX Track is located. This upcoming track is ideally placed with schools and youth clubs and great transport links surrounding the park.

Access Sport’s BMX Legacy Programme are providing up to £24,000 to develop a community BMX club on the new Langdon Park site.  They also help develop other BMX tracks in London for the tracks to be open-access public facilities that do not need to be opened, closed or managed on a day-to-day basis. The track will be free for youths to use and intended to be safe and safe-regulating.

During the week activities will take place provided by the community club at regular times when anyone can attend and will have access to equipment if needed. The track will be ready for use at the end of April.
