UEL: The Place To Make Your Mark

Anna Rota caught up with Matthew Tansley about the Leave your Legacy campaign, the idea behind it and the meaning the advert aims to spread.

The University of East London is where talent and passion give life to incredible opportunities to be remembered for a lifetime.

UEL allows athletes who are willing to make sacrifices to be the best they can, embracing their ambitions and reaching goals they could have only dreamt of.

UEL is the place where you can challenge yourself everyday, it is where you can make the difference; UEL is where you can leave your legacy.

Leave your Legacy

Over the years UEL has become one of the most successful universities in the country with regards to sports facilities and athletes.

With a host of sports scholars with huge potential, including Olympians, senior internationals and professional sportspeople who play for UEL at national and international university competitions, the University of East London has laid the foundations to craft the next world-class athletic stars of the future.

To celebrate such a great success and ambition UEL has showcased its treasures in a brilliant advert describing what UEL is and how it empowers its athletes to progress and achieve.

‘Our story – it’s your story’

“We wanted something very distinct, we wanted to stand out.”

Matthew Tansley, High Performance Sport Manager at the University of East London, describes with this statement how he wanted to portray UEL’s incredible and successful sport personalities.

Great ambitions, inspirations from the most famous sports corporations and a general yet strong idea of what had to be done, helped shape an incredibly successful advert which has contributed to putting UEL on the map.

“Leave your Legacy” is the name of the advert. A strong, distinct title which embraces the values of the service provided here at UEL, as well as celebrating old glories and welcoming new ones.

“For us legacy was about challenging current students and new students in terms of how they are going to make sure they are going to leave the UEL shirt in a better place than when you came here,” say Tansley.

The High Performance Sport Manager summed up with these words what leaving your legacy at UEL really means,  adding: “many students can buy into this idea that they can shape this in their own image, that they can leave a really positive mark in this programme and leave it in a stronger position.”

The importance of looking ahead

UEL has come a long way, and prior to the campaign being launched Tansley  felt the need to raise more awareness about scholarship programmes and some great opportunities UEL has to offer to the talented athletes from all over the world.

“The danger is if you sit still and do nothing you don’t move forward, you go backwards and for us it is always about thinking ahead.”

Proud of who we are

UEL is proud of its diversity and of the success arising from it. This great combination can clearly be seen in the campaign as Tansley stated: “We wanted to choose student athletes who reflect our programme, we are extremely diverse and we are proud of our diversity. We wanted to make sure we were reflecting all our students. In addition to that we have some talented students and we wanted to showcase them, so we tried to pick students that were at the top of their game with an exciting prospect for the future.”

Living the present the best you can while always looking ahead is the philosophy that has distinguished UEL over the years. The athletes here are constantly encouraged to strive to do their best and achieve great results, not only for themselves but also for the generations to come. Their contribution is key to continue developing the sports programme and achieve other great results in the years to come.

A success driven by the people

A big part of the Leave your Legacy campaign is given by the sport scholars at UEL.

The scholar programme has improved massively over the years. Tansley states:” When I started in 2013 we had 25/30 athletes and now we have around 160 athletes that we are managing.”

The programme has become more and more popular, however Tansley gives the credit for this success to the people who work around the SportsDock who provide support, and develop international and national programme to attract students from other universities.

A legacy to last

The legacy campaign is an ongoing process. Tansley confirmed that there are plans on filming a few more adverts showing hopefully different sports.

As well as continuing the campaign, the Sport Manager and his collaborates will continue to brand the SportsDock over the next 12 months.

UEL has developed an incredible potential for athletes who want to make the difference and leave their mark. UEL is where you can show who you are.

The University of East London is somewhere you can grow and reach your hardest goals, with bursaries of up to £6,000 per annum in various sports such as Athletics, Basketball, Football, Tennis and Volleyball.
