Charlton Athletic continued their great run of form under Caretaker Manager Johnnie Jackson as they produced two second-half goals to beat Sky Bet League One leaders Plymouth Argyle on Saturday.

An action-packed opening first-half gave the capacity crowd at The Valley excellent viewing, with chances presenting themselves to both sides throughout the opening 45 minutes.

Addicks Assertion

Plymouth nearly opened the scoring in the first few minutes, with Macaulay Gillesphey shooting just wide of the hosts’ net from a Conor Grant corner.

The visitors then nearly gifted the Addicks the lead when defender Dan Scarr gave possession to George Dobson, but the midfielder could only drag his effort wide of Michael Cooper’s goal.

Plymouth midfielder Pantuche Camará produced a heroic moment of defending when he blocked Alex Gilbey’s header from close range 18 minutes in.

Elliot Lee then hit the left upright with a header from Dobson’s delivery, the packed crowd left wondering whether it just wasn’t their day.

Poaching Purrington

It wasn’t until the 61st minute that Charlton found the opener, Ben Purrington netting his second goal in as many games when he volleyed past Cooper following another delightful Dobson delivery.

The 23,244 home fans would yet have more to cheer about when Conor Washington settled the contest in the 84th minute, firing past Cooper after Lee had found him with an inch-perfect pass.

The Addicks put in a great performance against the most in-form side in the division, and will look to take that performance and the unbeaten run they’re on since Jackson took over into Tuesday night’s league fixture at Morecambe.
