Championship is in arms reach

Teri Dormer previews UELs upcoming title-deciding fixture.

As the final game of the 2016-17 badminton season creeps up, excitement is pulsing for University of East London men’s team, as they are just moments away from taking the title home.

UEL are currently undefeated in the BUCS South Eastern B league with one game in hand and 23 points. Their final game takes place on Wednesday 15th March against London South Bank University Men’s 1st, and if won, UEL would be the undefeated champions of this season.

However, the pressure is incredibly high, if the east London side score a draw or lose their final game the title will be snatched away from them. A win at all cost is needed for UEL to get their deserved title.

Pressures

Badminton star Ali Chin has gone through a roller-coaster ride since joining the team last year. After coming last in the league to now captaining the top of the table side, Chin told Rising East his thoughts on the upcoming deciding game and the pressures of their much-needed victory.

“We can’t be complacent thinking we have won already” says Chin. Although the team have done well this year this is a new and important game so they cannot rely on previous scores to see them through it.

Southbank are currently in fourth position having won two game and lost six. UEL are the favourites to win on their home turf.

Regardless of UEL’s current situation Chin has advised his team to “remain calm and do what we know we can do best”.

The final game for University of East London will take place at the Sports Dock for a 1:30pm start.
