Charlton will be hoping to bounce back after a disappointing midweek display when they travel to Montgomery Waters Meadow to take on Shrewsbury Town on Saturday (3pm).

The Addicks welcomed 2,000 supporters back to The Valley on Tuesday night, though Lee Bowyer’s team gave them little to cheer about as his side picked up their second defeat in three League One games at the hands of MK Dons.

Shrewsbury also played host to supporters in midweek as 1,500 Salop fans watched their side draw 2-2 with Accrington Stanley

The Shrews thought they had won it when Shaun Walley found the top-left corner with a fantastic free-kick with four minutes to go but were denied their first home victory of the campaign in stoppage-time when Stanley forward Ryan Cassidy smashed home the rebound after Matija Šarkić initially denied him from 12 yards.

Steve Cotterill will take charge of his second league match at the weekend after being appointed on 27 November following Sam Ricketts’ dismissal. The Shropshire find themselves in 23rd and are winless in nine League One Games.

Team News

The Addicks will welcome back Ian Maatsen after the Chelsea loanee served his one-match suspension on Tuesday night, while Akin Famewo is expected to feature again after returning to the bench in midweek for the first time since he was forced off at Fratton Park.

Bowyer will be monitoring the availability of Andrew Shinnie who was withdrawn at half-time with complaints of a tight thigh, with Jake Forster-Caskey (hamstring) and Paul Smyth (knee gash) likely to miss out.

Quartet Deji Oshilaja (self-isolating), Ryan Inniss (quad), Dylan Levitt (coronavirus), and Alfie Doughty (hamstring) remain unavailable

The hosts will be without long-term absentees Marlon Fossey, Ryan Sears (both ankle), and Rekeil Pyke (groin). Ethan Ebanks-Landell will miss out after being withdrawn during the Shrews’ FA Cup victory against Oxford City last week with a head injury.

Former Addicks forward Leon Clarke is also sidelined as he continues to recover from a hamstring injury.

The Shrew To Watch

Shaun Whalley is the side’s joint top scorer so far this season with Grenadian defender Aaron Pierre.

Whalley has netted in consecutive League One outings and will be brimming with confidence after a delightful free-kick into the top-left corner on Tuesday evening.

Head-to-Head

Charlton have met Shrewsbury on 25 previous occasions with the Addicks winning eight, the Shrews seven, and the remaining ten games ending in draws.

The last meeting between the two sides came in January 2019 in League One with the Addicks returning to SE7 with all three points after goals from Lyle Taylor, Darren Pratley, and Karlan Grant earned a 3-0 win.
